In July 2016 Collide presented Heiner Müller’s Hamletmachine; a collage of fragments, an orgy of deconstruction. We invited audiences you to walk through the pieces of a broken civilisation and experience a grotesque wasteland full of beauty and cruelty. The human body stands at its centre – fragile and yet capable of extreme destruction and pain.
We live in a time when Europe is facing all sorts of crises – economic, political, social, humanitarian ones – governments are busy burying these problems rather than facing them with actual solutions, and young people do not know which way to go. For Müller’s Hamlet to be a machine is to be free of cultural and personal memory, to feel no pain, to have no thoughts. With a disturbing energy Müller writes of the “ruins of Europe,” for a revolution that both reduces and elevates humans to machines. Hamletmachine is a harrowing portrait of the aftermath of a war, of life under crisis.
This provocative site-specific production invited audiences to enter a diseased crumbling world, and to experience the struggle for a new unspoiled one. Hamletmachine was a site-specific promenade performance in an unused warehouse on Tanner Street (Tower Bridge, London) as part of Ugly Duck’s latest creative season.

Jamie Spindlove trained at City Lit on the Advanced Performance Diploma graduating in 2013. Jamie is also a member of the NYT and the Young friends of Almeida. He has been performing on the London fringe for a number of years on productions such as “The Spanish Tragedy”, “The Summer of Love” and “Under Milkwood”. His most recent role was Eddie in “Seasons Greetings” at the John Lyon Theatre.
Ava Pickett graduated from Middlesex University in 2015 and has since appeared in several productions including “Shards” and “The Iliad” at The Almeida Theatre and “I’m fine” at Theatre Royal Stratford East. She’s interested in Politics and Shakespeare and is a co founder of Fictive Theatre.
Alexandra Sinclair is a recent graduate of Drama Centre London and also trained at the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute in Moscow. Her recent work includes playing Madge Conway in JB Priestley’s Time and the Conway’s, Titania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Ranyevskaya in Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard and most recently, Sarah in The Pursuit of Unhappiness as part of Fragility’s takeover of The Cat’s Back at the Wandsworth Fringe.
Susan Hoffman is a London based actor, occasional writer and founding member of theatre company Rock Paper Scissors. As a recent graduate of Arts Educational Schools Susan seeks to express her joie de vivre in moderately eccentric ways in acting, dancing and when doing groceries. Trained in stage combat, ballroom, salsa and open to freestyle at any given time of the day she has a particular interest in creating work that is bold, relevant and silly-serious. After sporadically fire-breathing in a park there is nothing in the world she loves more than meeting new people and having a good old chat. She most recently starred in With or without EU directed by Hayley Cusick at the Bread and Roses Theatre, which she co-wrote.
Maximilian Davey is a London based actor who trained at Mountview. After completing a ‘Theatre and performance’ degree at Goldsmiths he performed in a short solo performance art piece at the Battersea Arts Centre called ‘Label Boy’ as well as working in production at the Arcola Theatre. Deciding to focus on acting Max has been training at Mountview this year as well as working with the Almeida Theatre, filming shorts with the London film School and done a few short performances with the National Youth Theatre. Max also is an avid singer and writer, completing the Soho Theatre young writers course back in 2013.
Jordan Matthews graduated from The MTA in September 2014 where she studied both acting and musical theatre. Whilst training her credits include Electra in Electra at The Courtyard Theatre, Kolokolo bird in Just So at The Bridewelll Theatre and she also performed at The Lyric Theatre, in Cool Rider as part of the ensemble. Since graduating Jordan has worked abroad as a singer/dancer in Tenerife and also toured with a panto of Aladdin. Jordan is very excited to be a part of Hamletmachine and can’t wait to work with the cast and creative team to create a wonderful piece of theatre.
Chris Szuca graduated from East 15 MA Acting course in 2015. Since then he co founded Spit n Polish and played various roles in the acclaimed Why That And Not This at the Hope Theatre. Other recent roles include Simon Mededenko in Dirty Bird, John in Lolita, Le Bret in Cyrano and Mayor Bochette in a tour of Jack & The Beanstalk.
Oliver West recently trained with the National Youth Theatre Rep Company, performing at the Ambassadors Theatre. Theatre includes: Wuthering Heights, The Merchant of Venice, Consensual, Second Person Narrative (NYT Rep); You Can (NYT). TV Includes: Generation Sext (Sky Arts). Oliver facilitated workshops in Saudi Arabia for King Abdulaziz Cultural Exchange Programme.

Emily Louizou (Director) has just completed her BA English at UCL and is about to start her MFA in Theatre Directing at Birkbeck, University of London. Over the past eight years she has been actively involved in theatre companies by directing, producing and performing in plays. Last year she was chosen to direct Euripides’ Bacchae for UCL’s annual Classics Play, which was selected by the National Student Drama Festival 2015, and invited to give a special performance at the British Museum. Alegia Papageorgiou (Designer) is a scenographer based in London. Alegia was born and raised in Athens (Greece). With a background in Interior Design (BA Interior Design/ University of Derby, 2013) and theatre-costume design (final BA project). Since 2012 Alegia has worked for a range of theatre productions in Greece and UK, including National Theatre of Greece, Athens & Epidaurus festival, Athens biennale, Sutton theatre. She has also collaborated with freelance artists (scenographic and video installations). Greta Landers (Designer) is a Peruvian designer based in London. She is currently part of the MFA Scenography programme at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (University of London, United Kingdom). David Denyer (Music Composer) is an award-winning composer for theatre, screen and concert hall. He graduated last year with a distinction on his MA in Composition from the Royal College of Music in London. His recent work includes 4.48 Psychosis (Crypt Gallery, London), Streetcar Named Desire (London, June 2015), Bacchae (London and Intenrational Tour, 2015). His passion for music and his compositional style are rooted in his deep-seated desire to disturb, unsettle, and confuse his audience without mercy.
Rachel Horowitz (Producer) is passionate about working with the next generation of theatre makers. Trained as a Facilitator, Writer and Stage Manager, she has worked with The National Youth Theatre (Epic Stages, Rep Season at Ambassadors Theatre) The Pumpkin Players (Brainchild Festival, Hansel and Gretel at Chiswick House) and Hackney Empire (TWIST Theatre Company, SING OUT!).
Inés Aparicio (Marketing) is an Spanish Digital Marketer with a genuine interest in Social Entrepreneurship. She has worked for large and small companies including a Digital Agency, for which she has enjoyed developing creative strategies to use the Social Web. Her passion for communications and her ability to listen and understand audiences lead her to always look for innovative ways to resonate more strongly with them.
Hanna Junti (Movement) is a movement director and theatre maker, currently training at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (MFA Movement: Directing and Teaching). Since her undergraduate Drama and Theatre Arts studies at Goldsmiths (University of London), Hanna has been working as a performer, director and lighting designer, her experience covering devised theatre, live art and immersive performance. Her recent movement credits include work with puppeteers as well as stage- and screen actors. Hanna is currently teaching movement on the BA Drama and Applied Theatre in Education course at RCSSD and doing 1:1 movement coaching.
Ioli Filippakopoulou (Movement) is a movement director and performer based in London. Ioli has an MA in Movement Studies from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and currently she is a PhD candidate at Central Saint Martins, London. Since graduating in 2012, she has worked professionally in theatre and film in both Greece and the UK. Recent work includes: Movement Director for After the End (University of Exeter), Assistant Movement Director for Posture in Dante’s Comedy (R&D project, Drama Centre), Movement Director for Splinter (Camden People’s Theatre).

Florence Knoyle (Video & Photography) is a Fine Art Film Maker and Photographer, best known for her contribution to the BFI Imax Waterloo, is a Camden born and Hereford based talent that has an incredibly bright future in the field. Knoyle specialises in conceptual and often edgy films depicting issues with femininity and being a woman in a modern society. Rarely the object of her film herself, her unique style means that her presence is always felt in every aspect of her incredible work. Influenced by early German Expressionism and Film Noir, including legendary film Nosferatu, Knoyle’s work lends itself to becoming truly exciting. She continues to develop her artistry studying Performance Design and Practice at Central St Martins and then BA Short Film Making at Hereford College Of Arts.
Lucy Hickling (Stage Manager) is a stage manager, producer and writer based in London. Since sixteen Lucy has been training with the National Youth Theatre, having worked on Epic Stages (Barbican Centre, 2014), Playing Up (Arcola Theatre, 2015), Homegrown (Site Specific, 2015) and Skunk (UCL Academy, 2015). More recently Lucy has been woking with the Royal Court, acting as a young representative on script panel meetings she is also a member of the Young Board where she is currently co-producing this years Open Court festival.
